EDEKA Switches All Private Label to Pacifical MSC

ATUNA reports that the German retailer’s private label tuna assortment change to MSC certified will occur in March, 2020 . The produce will contain free-school MSC certified skipjack from PNA (Pacifical), which will be offered at entry-level price… The certification of PNA tuna fisheries (Link to MSC’s Assessments PNA Western and Central Pacific skipjacks and yellowfin on their website) has been criticized by many NGOs including Make Stewardship Count for compartmentalization (certifying free school while also using FADs) and finning (Case Study Finned Silky Shark). Furthermore, PNA can  continue to compartmentalize until 2023, which has been granted by MSC as a change over period for the new regulation introduced as part of the FCP  WWF’s decision to co-label this brand is unexpected in light of WWF’s criticism over an increased number of MSC certification and decisions.
